The Barcelona World Race is one of the two most important regattas in the IMOCA Class racing calendar; the class with the most regattas and the largest media reach in the world.
It is the first sporting event to gain three ISO certifications (Quality, the Environment and Safety), which guarantees the highest standards of quality management.
It is also directly linked to the prestige and quality of ‘brand Barcelona’. It is the only round-the-world regatta to carry the name of a city and to become part of its public heritage.
Tax relief
The Barcelona World Race is entirely privately financed via sponsorship. It is an event recognised by Spain as being “of exceptional public interest” and as such is included in the Spanish Government Budget. This means that any companies choosing to sponsor the regatta are able, by law, to enjoy tax benefits and recover some of the expenditure on advertising.
The amounts covered by the tax relief are generously surpassed by the VAT income generated by the economic impact of the Barcelona World Race, and therefore the regatta provides greater return for the state than the value of the relief.

The Barcelona World Race is an event which takes place over an extended period. Events begin with the schedule of activities in the run-up to the start in Barcelona, then there is over three months of racing, including the stopover and the PR activities in Sydney. The event therefore offers a return over an extended period of time with presence in two iconic cities in each hemisphere. That guarantees a sustained presence over an extended period in the media across the world.
