Why?

Last day at sea!
Less than 100 miles to go!

I frequently get asked why I do this kind race when I know that I will be wet, cold and uncomfortable in advance? While there is no more impressive race course than “around the world” the motivation is not to circumnavigate the globe. That was done in 1522 by Magellan’s three year expedition and can now be done in 48 hours by anyone with a credit card and a stomach for airplane food. Is it then pointless to go all that way just to end up in the same place? No, that would be like saying that Lewis Hamilton just drives around in circles on Sunday afternoons!

Back in the Med!

What an amazing day
Remember that elephant story from a few days ago? Well, we’re down to our last chunk! Now back into the Alboran Sea in the western part of the Mediterranean, we have light winds and slow progress like the last time we were here but are not cursing Artemis or Heol as we are just thrilled to be here. However, making it this far was quite the story.

Cape Verdes Islands?  Ancient history! Canary Islands? Far behind! Madeira? In our wake! When tasked with an impossible mission, my mum always used to say “Well how do you eat an elephant?!” to which I would dutifully reply “little piece by little piece”. Little activist that I was, I should have scolded her for promoting illegal ivory trade and talking that way in front of a vegetarian, but you get the point. Our long slog northwards has been cut into little pieces by the island chains we have encountered and now the last one is behind us. Just over 500 miles remain Gibraltar and then onwards to Barcelona.
