Weather Forecast Barcelona World Race Issued 0300Z 03-JAN-2015 Moderate E’ly winds over the Alboran Sea enter Gibraltar and accelerate out the western approaches and across the Gulf of Cadiz. A zone of accelerated flow downwind of the Strait will carry most of the fleet quickly west, avoiding an area of lighter winds off the Moroccan coast. The transition into developing NE’ly trade winds looks set to occur Monday north of the Canary Islands.
After crossing through the Gibraltar Strait, One Planet, One Ocean & Pharmaton and We Are Water are transitioning to upwind sailing as a building Eíly is developing across the Strait and Alboran Sea. Fresh E/SE winds are forecast by late today, expect lighter along the immediate Spanish coast in the afternoon when sea breezes are active. Renault Captur had a short period of easting yesterday when the wind shifted N, but the breeze veered NE again and they had to once again tack north. There is another dying cold front moving south which will back the wind left again and should allow for another tack to the east at some point today. Spirit of Hungary is solidly in the trade winds and will be for the next few days as they sail north.
