All but Spirit of Hungary have escaped the doldrums. The top 5 are now making good progress south-southwest now, aiming to go around the western periphery of the South Atlantic high pressure in a few days time.
The leaders will soon skirt the western periphery of the South Atlantic high pressure aiming to enter some stronger pre-frontal NW’lies approaching 30S. Meanwhile, ESE/E trade winds will continue to support a quick reach south for the middle of the fleet. Spirit of Hungary is expected to soon cross the doldrums and enter into the Southern Hemisphere trade winds.
The lead boats are now working their way through the transition from trade winds to westerlies, with some complex patterns to navigate over the next couple days. Mid-fleet, the E’ly trades hold, though some areas of showers embedded within flow will create areas of unstable wind. Spirit of Hungary continues to transition out of the Doldrums and into the South Atlantic trade winds.
Cheminees Poujoulat has just about reached the trade winds in the South Atlantic, though it is a bit unstable and conditions will remain so for the next 24 hours or so. Neutrogena and GAES Centros Auditivos are struggling to cross a high pressure ridge with light and variable winds, but more promising Nílies should arrive soon. The Southern Ocean continues to provide strong winds and large following swells for We Are Water,One Planet One Ocean & Pharmaton, and Renault. Meanwhile, Spirit of Hungary is moving through lighter winds under high pressure, with the situation not expected to improve for a day or so.
Cheminees Poujoulat has transitioned into the South Atlantic trade winds which will carry them north to the Equator. Still light, the trades build and angles free as they sail further north. Neutrogena and GAES Centros Auditivos are managing a tricky spot of weather after crossing a ridge. A compact low pressure is passing just north and east of them and will bring a building S’ly as it passes to push them north again. In the Southern Ocean a massive storm has split We Are Water and One Planet, One Ocean & Pharmaton to the east, and Renault Captur to the west. Renault Captur is making a wide detour north to stay in more favorable winds around the low pressure. Meanwhile, Spirit of Hungary continues to struggle with lighter winds under high pressure which lies just south of the Ice Exclusion Boundary.
