Visiting the pontoon (2): the masts
Fixed mast with two, three and four sets of spreaders. For some, this is the most reliable option, although the mast pole profile offers a less aerodynamic performance, a disadvantage that can be noted more between close reaches and reaching (at wind angles of between 60º and 90º). On the positive side it has better performance levels close hauled (45º angle of wind). Hugo Boss (4 sets of spreaders), Virbac-Paprec 3 (2 sets) and Mirabaud (3 sets) have this type of mast.
Rotating wing mast with outriggers. The rotating wing mast offers aerodynamic advantages at more open angles than close hauled. This rigging can be easily identified thanks to its spectacular outriggers, two arms which outstretch on each side (they can look like horns or antennae) and separate the shrouds to give the enormous mast more support. This system reduces the need for a fixed rigging, other benefits include increased lightness of the rigging and the avoidance of classic faults due to fatigue. The outriggers on these masts also allow the angle to be opened to sheet the headsails from beyond the beam, which increases the performance of these sails when close reaching and reaching. These masts need to be built to be extremely light, because their mass requires it, and for some, that's a risk. Foncia, Groupe Bel, Movistar and Neutrogena Fórmula Noruega have this type of rigging.
Narrower rotating wing masts with one set of articulated spreaders and one or two diamonds. These are, on average, some 25 kilos heavier than the classic three sets of spreaders, but they have the advantage of a lower rigging centre of gravity. They have also demonstrated a good risk/performance ratio, as the aerodynamics have been improved with respect to traditional models and their design and construction does not require maximum lightness as with the wing masts with outriggers. GAES Centros Auditivos, Estrella Damm and Président use this system with a single diamond, and Central Lechera Asturiana with two.
