Jean Pierre Dick, along with Damian Foxall was the brilliant winner of the first edition of the Barcelona World Race, and is one of solo sailing's key figures and one of the most successful double-handed yachtsmen ever, also with two victories in the Transat Jacques Vabre, as well as this double-handed round the world challenge under his belt. The fist of the Transat victories was alongside Loïck Peyron, with whom he'll be racing in this second edition of the Barcelona World Race, making up one of the most powerful partnerships in the regatta fleet.
Loïck Peyron is a sailor with a spectacular CV. It goes back to the 1980s and includes all of the offshore disciplines from the Mini Class to Maxi-catamarans, via intense and fruitful campaigns in the IMOCA Open 60 Class and in the ORMA 60 Multihull class. Loïck has completed two circumnavigations of the globe and a whopping 42 Atlantic crossings, 18 of those solo.
As well as their double-handed Atlantic victory, Jean-Pierre and Loïck have also developed other technical projects together, such as the design and build of Paprec-Virbac 2 and Gitana Eighty (the current Estrella Damm and Renault) which also means they know each other very well in tactical and technical terms. They will sail the new Virbac-Paprec 3, which both skippers sailed from Panama to Newport (over 4,300 miles), one of the transport legs planned by Jean-Pierre Dick and his new team from New Zealand to France once the build was completed. The new boat, as with all of Jean-Pierre's boats, reveals many innovations and will reach the 31st of December finishing line having been tested thoroughly, which will mean that the French duo will be one of the most powerful and difficult teams to beat in this challenge.

The boat
Virbac-Paprec 3 is a VPLP and Guillaume Verdier design built at Cookson Boats in New Zealand. As with all of the boats brought to life by Dick, Virbac-Paprec 3 has outstanding technological innovations. The first is related to a decrease in weight, with the new boat some 15% lighter than Paprec-Virbac 2, with which Jean-Pierre won the Barcelona World Race 2007/08. The deck is designed according to the latest trend to move life onboard outside. As such, the new Virbac-Paprec 3 has a twin coach roof divided into two 'cocoons' under a plexiglass bubble to allow perfect vision around, like a helicopter. The inside of the yacht is fairly bare and the mast has just two layers of spreaders, but with just one backstay cable instead of three to reduce weight and aerodynamic resistance.
