The Barcelona World Race Interpretation Centre

Spain's first interpretation centre for ocean sailing, this innovative and attractive space is also offered by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) to companies and organisations for special events, including the availability of a themed corporate hospitality programme.

The Centre is located at the Muelle de Levante in the Port of Barcelona, by the Nova Bocana, opposite the W Barcelona Hotel. It is situated in a regenerated area of the Barceloneta which is easily accessible and is currently in full swing of expansion.

The Barcelona World Race Interpretation Centre is housed in a building dating back to 1911 and was built as a storage unit for pilot boats, although it was eventually used as a deposit for state buoys.

Use of the building, which is split over two floors, was granted by the Port of Barcelona to the Barcelona World Race and it was remodelled by the architects Carles Ferrater and Jordi Carbonell, who carefully preserved the building's charm and original architectural features.

Ocean sailing exhibition

The official opening for the ocean sailing exhibition on the ground floor of the building was held on the 17th of May 2012. It soon established its position as a standard for ocean sailing worldwide. The exhibition is open to the public and includes multimedia and interactive resources, as well as using the latest generation CISCO Digital Mediasuite technology, allowing easy access for all of the information available to be regularly updated.

The exhibition focusses on different areas of interest of the Barcelona World Race: the regatta, the sea planet, the boats, history and the human factor. One of the key aspects underlined through the exhibition is the regatta's sustained commitment to the environment; sustainable construction processes; recycling and towards making cleaner seas.

During their visit, the public can experience and enjoy the world's oceans, discover the history of round the world racing and find out about those who made it, as well as exploring some of the most difficult challenges faced by skippers out on the oceans.

Hospitality programe

The unique and attractive space is complemented by a corporate hospitality programme founded on the experiences of the Barcelona World Race skippers and the boats used for their round the world challenge: the IMOCA 60s.

The privileged position of the Barcelona World Race Interpretation Centre, in a vibrant and central location in the city of Barcelona, makes it an ideal venue for any corporate celebration, with the additional attraction of a hospitality programme based on the double-handed round the world regatta.

The programme, which is set up as a flexible complement to the needs of the companies hiring out the Interpretation Centre spaces, recreates the sensations of sailing in a round the world yacht and invites guests to appreciate the sporting values underpinning the Barcelona World Race and gives them a background in the technical aspects of preparing a team and boat to sail around the planet.

One of the options available as part of the programme is a trip on the Mirabaud training yacht, an IMOCA 60, offering a top-level sailing experience. This activity is particularly aimed at companies looking to foster team work, strengthen interpersonal relationships and to provide incentives for employees or secure clients. Ocean sailing stands out as a sport representative of the importance of personal values, communication and cohabitation, all key elements in optimising interpersonal relationships. Team work, leadership, motivation, task prioritising, communication and delegation, response capacities and respect for the environment are some of the qualities nurtured through the programme.

The Interpretation Centre also offers guided tours and workshops to educational centres, related to the skippers' lives on board the yachts.

Both the Barcelona World Race Interpretation Centre and the hospitality programme are part of the FNOB's framework objective to foster projects associated with education and the history and culture of sailing, as experienced  through the values and principles at the heart of the Barcelona World Race.
